Explore the Cancun Museums: 6 Unique Places That You Can Visit!
These are some of the most interesting things to do in Cancun. Learn about culture, history, art, and more, in this list of the top Cancun Museums.
Are you a Museophile or a Museumgoer? If you are, then I have just the blog for you. Whether you are a true lover of culture and history or are just looking for something different to do on vacation, this guide to Cancun museums will show you some peaceful places that you can enjoy alone, with friends, or with someone you love.
One huge benefit to the museums of Cancun is that whilst everyone is going to the big excursions like Chichen Itza and Coco Bongo, very few people are taking advantage of the museum experiences. This means that if you want to get away from the crowds, if you wish to create more personal and peaceful moments, then this may be a perfect activity for you to enjoy.
Mayan Museum of Cancun
Starting off strong, we have a deep dive into the authentic culture of the region that is just a short distance from the Cancun Hotel Zone. At the Mayan Museum in Cancun, you can expect a lot of different statues and Mayan artifacts for you to go through. Estimated time to properly look through everything should take you about an hour and a half.
These artifacts have been collected from the Quintana Roo Region as well as from important archaeological sites like Chichen Itza, Palenque, Comalcalco, and more.
Once you gain access to this Cancun Museum, you will be able to explore 3 exhibition halls as well as the outdoor archaeological site of San Miguelito. Each space has been designed to dedicate its attention to different aspects of Mayan history and culture.
The Old Car Museum of Southeastern Mexico
The Southeast Automobile Museum is a hidden gem that almost no one knows about. It is also quite an unusual museum, to say the least, and will take between 1 and 2 hours to explore. First of all, this old car museum in Cancun houses extremely old vehicles from 1917 - 1922. So if you are a true fan of classical automobiles, these cars will take you back in time and leave you breathless.
Secondly, it appears that this is the first museum for The Carrera Panamericana which was a sedan race held in the 1950s from one side of Mexico to the other. This long-winding race only lasted about 5 years and is famous for being regarded as the most dangerous race of all time.
Tequila Museum in Cancun
Are you looking for a Cancun tequila tour? Whilst there are lots of options for authentic tequila in Mexico, including the tequila tastings of your All Inclusive resort, the tequila museum is still a fun and enjoyable experience.
Tequila connoisseurs will be delighted not only to learn about the history and distillery of tequila but also to see the world's largest collection of tequila with some great opportunities for Cancun tequila tasting. Whilst this tends to be more of a shop than a real museum, there is a lot to learn and indulge in. A walk around the tequila museum should probably only take about half an hour.
The Cancun wax museum
Vacation photos are important. Most people expect you to come home with dazzling swimsuit pictures on white sands amidst the swaying palms of the coast. However, sometimes it's fun just to take some photos that are a little less serious.
Walk into the Cancun wax museum to stand aside celebrities, characters, and even royalty. When the waxworks are done really well, it makes for some cool photos that spark some fun conversations and when the waxworks are not done so well, it makes for some really hilarious times with your friends. Laughter is bound to be a part of this experience. Spend an hour going from room to room as you meet over 100 waxwork sculptures from pop culture, media, and history.
The 3D Museum of Wonders
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk into a painting? In this Cancun museum, you actually can. Each 2D painting and artwork has been made to seem like it is coming out of the frame, the floor, or the wall.
It's a mind-warping collection of optical illusions which makes for some very interesting discoveries and some really special photos. Take pictures of yourself inside a bubble, play cards with a painting, and be the figure on top of a giant wedding cake. Each room brings you something new to excite your imagination for about an hour and a half to two hours.
MUSA Underwater Art Museum
Cancun’s underwater museum is an extremely unique concept for those who care about the environment and enjoy being in the water. This environmentally friendly attraction has artistically created sculptures placed underwater near Isla Mujeres for you to explore. These sculptures, in turn, create homes for a lot of sea creatures and promote biodiversity.
Whilst you won't get a tour guide telling you about each art piece underwater it is a really fun way to discover art and a truly unique thing to see in the Caribbean ocean. The time it takes you to explore this attraction will depend on which statues in which area you visit and how long you want to stay.
